10 years of illustrated journaling

One of my first pages from January 2016.
One of my first pages from January 2016.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of when I started my illustrated journal journey. I've just begun my 100th book. The first books took 3-4 months to fill, and now I get through a book a month. Making that decision, 10 years ago was one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you are thinking of trying something new this year, then taking up drawing, writing, illustrating or art journaling is something I can recommend.

I look back at those early pages and they are steeped in my son's toddlerhood. Memories of his small shoes and favourite toys. The small details of life, of childhood, that often go unrecorded. He's 13 now, past the magic years, where his mum was his world, but my drawings and writings of that time are a joyful reminder of being a mother for the first time. Crucially, these books were a way of maintaing creativity, and a sense of self, when my entire world revolved around my son. I can't believe that picking up a book and pen 10 years ago has led me to here, but I'm so pleased I took the plunge on that cold January night in 2016.
