Our shack by the sea

It's 10 years this month since I became the owner of a wooden chalet on the Humberston Fitties. My son was not yet three years old. The place was painted bright yellow and lilac on the inside, and had definitely seen better days. Over the years it's been gradually transformed into a place that's full of family memories and my artwork of the area. We rent it out to help cover the costs. This is a heritage property, built originally in 1932, and custodianship is something I take seriously. We've been really fortunate this year that our renters have been lovely, and enjoyed being in our shack by the sea and enjoyed what the area has to offer. Sadly, once a year, we get a visitor who hasn't read the comprehensive information I send guests about the place and its heritage, and what to expect. It's gut wrenching to be on the receiving end of threats and abuse, as I was on Friday from someone who found the chalet didn't meet their expectations. This can be really disheartening as we work so hard on our special place. Brains tend to remember the negative things, not the good ones. But, we've had some lovely guests this year, for whom our chalet on the Fitties has become part of their fond memories. And they are the ones that count, that help us to keep this place heading towards its centenary!
