As part of the Fishing Heritage Centre's Hometown Heroes' celebration of North East Lincolnshire's sporting heroes I was asked to paint a large canvas of Grimsby's Brenda Fisher, who swam the English Channel in record time in 1951. This was a challenge to me as I normally work on a small scale in watercolour and ink, this piece was created in acrylic and markers. I wanted to get across the idea of Brenda tackling the immense amount of water in the channel, and also her motivation for doing it. Her brother Buster was a fighter pilot who had died during the Second World War, and I imagined her thinking of him while she was undertaking this amazing achievement.
